2026-11-01

Why Getting the Right Start Matters in the Anime World

Anime, the art of Japanese animation, has gained massive popularity worldwide in recent years. However, for newcomers stepping into this vibrant universe, finding the right show among hundreds of options can be a complex process. Many people might assume anime is only for a young audience due to childhood cartoons, but anime is a rich medium offering extraordinary stories for adults across genres like philosophy, psychology, sci-fi, mystery, and drama.

Your choice of where to start directly impacts your perspective on this universe. Instead of diving into series with complex watch orders or thousands of episodes, the best strategy is to start with productions that have solid plots, fast pacing, and stories that immediately draw you in. The Kagami team has compiled this guide to feature the ideal starter series that will shatter all your anime stereotypes, catering to viewers with diverse film and series preferences.

1. For Mental Games and Mystery Lovers: Death Note

The production that the vast majority of anime beginners first watch and fall in love with is undoubtedly Death Note. The story begins when high school student Light Yagami finds a mysterious notebook that falls from the sky, quickly turning into an international cat-and-mouse game. Light decides to use this power to kill anyone whose name he writes down to purge the world of criminals; however, he is opposed by "L," the world's most intelligent detective.

2. A Flawless Universe and Brotherhood: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, one of the highest-rated anime of all time, is a masterpiece for beginner-level viewers. Edward and Alphonse Elric, two brothers trying to resurrect their deceased mother through alchemy, suffer a great tragedy. Edward loses an arm and a leg, while Alphonse loses his entire body. The two brothers embark on a search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone to regain their bodies.

3. A Cinematic Visual Feast: Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)

If you prefer entering the anime world with a cinematic production that can be finished in one sitting rather than a series, Makoto Shinkai's Your Name is perfect for you. The film follows Mitsuha, who lives in a rural town, and Taki, a high school student in Tokyo, who mysteriously swap bodies. Although it starts like a simple coming-of-age story, it quickly transforms into a temporal and emotional mystery.

4. For Visual Quality and Action: Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Demon Slayer, which combines traditional Japanese culture with modern animation technology, is one of the biggest global phenomena in recent years. It follows Tanjiro Kamado, whose family is slaughtered by demons and whose sister turns into a demon, as he becomes a demon slayer to turn his sister back into a human and seek revenge.

5. A Fun, Warm, and Entertaining Family Story: SPY x FAMILY

If you are looking for a lighter, funnier, and less tiring production, SPY x FAMILY is an excellent choice. Master spy Twilight, who is forced to create a fake family for a mission, marries a woman who is a secret assassin and is accompanied by a telepathic little girl. The family dynamic formed by this trio, who are unaware of each other's true identities, becomes the stage for both funny and incredibly sweet moments.

6. A Dystopian and Philosophical Future: Psycho-Pass

For adult viewers who enjoy sci-fi, Cyberpunk, and philosophical themes, Psycho-Pass is a great starting point. Set in a dystopian future governed by an artificial intelligence called the Sibyl System, which can measure people's mental states and crime potential in real-time, the anime tells the story of police officers working in a public safety bureau and the criminals they pursue.
