First anime

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

A complete story with a clear moral spine, action, and an ending that the manga actually earned.

Episode 1 of Brotherhood, not the 2003 series, unless you want a different show on purpose.

Action

  • Demon Slayer

The cleanest action on-ramp: one sibling promise, fights you can follow, and a watch order that fits on a card.

Unwavering Resolve, episode 1. Save Mugen Train until that season ends.

    Watch order
  • Jujutsu Kaisen

Modern, funny, and meaner than the jokes suggest. A good second action series if Demon Slayer felt too earnest.

Season 1, episode 1. The film waits until that season is finished.

Mystery

  • Death Note

A finished argument between two extremely sure people. You will know, by episode three, if this medium is for you.

Start at episode 1. Ignore the films until the 37 episodes are done.

Dark

  • Attack on Titan

A finished dark epic. The question it asks in episode 1 is not the question it ends on, and that is the reason to watch it in order.

Season 1, episode 1, then do not skip ahead to the final season.

    Watch order
  • Chainsaw Man

Short, rude, and more tender than the poster. For when you want action that refuses a clean moral.

Season 1, then the Reze film. Twelve episodes is a fair test.

Quiet

  • Spy × Family

A found family that is also a spy joke. The lightest complete-feeling evening on this shelf.

Episode 1, in order. There is no film you need first. It sits outside the eight long guides on purpose.

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

An elf walks back through a finished adventure and learns what she missed. Quiet, and not empty.

Episode 1. Let it be slow. That is the subject, not a flaw.

Heart

  • One Piece

The long commitment. Start it when you already like anime and want a crew you will keep for years, or read the manga if episodes feel endless.

Episode 1, or manga chapter 1. Do not begin at Wano.

    Watch order
  • Naruto

A loud story about being seen. Skip the late filler of the first series if you want the promise without the detours.

Episode 1. If you are impatient, stop the first series at episode 135, then move to Shippuden.
